A former Dallas Cowboys player has made some indicting comments about the culture of the famed NFL franchise.

While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, tight end Dalton Schultz, who is heading into his second year with the Houston Texans after spending the first five years of his career with the Cowboys,  described how his new team feels much more focused on football compared to the Cowboys.

Schultz explained that arriving in Houston made him realize just how bizarre some of his experiences with the Cowboys were.

“That was one of the first things that kind of stuck out to me,” Schultz said when McAfee asked how much his experiences with the two teams differed.

“It feels like… I don’t want to say college because it’s not. But the focus is just football. Describing some of the interactions that you’d see on a day-to-day basis [with the Cowboys] surprised a lot of people. They’re like, ‘Holy crap, that actually happened at a practice facility?’ You think it’s normal and then you come to a place like this,” Schultz explained.

McAfee then asked Schultz for any specific examples, which prompted the 27-year-old Stanford product to recall fans coming through the weight room for a tour while the team was working out.

“There’s people going on tours while you’re lifting in the weight room. And they’ve got a one-way mirror for people to look through, it’s literally a zoo, dude,” Schultz said. “There’s people tapping on the glass trying to get people’s attention as they’re doing power cleans. It’s just different. That’s the brand they’ve built. That’s what Jerry Jones likes.”

Schultz’s comments should certainly highlight why the Cowboys haven’t been to the NFC Championship since before the turn of the century, as the culture that Jones has cultivated seems more focused on economics than wins.

Despite another disappointing early exit from the playoffs last season, Jones decided to retain head coach Mike McCarthy, who will surely go into 2024 knowing his job is on the line.
