Mississippi State running back Dillon Johnson made waves upon entering the transfer market on Wednesday. A three-year contributor for the Bulldogs, Johnson apparently took issue with Mike Leach’s leadership.

He posted a graphic on Twitter to announce his intention to enter the transfer portal. The letter contained all of the typical thank you’s to family and teammates but omitted from that list was his head coach.

Instead, Johnson took a shot at Leach, who was critical of his decision to leave the program.

“Since I am not very tough and Leach is glad I am leaving, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal.”

Shots fired.

It’s a bit surprising given how big a part of the offense he’s been over the last two seasons. Dillon Johnson’s tallied nearly 1,700 yards since his sophomore year, reaching the endzone eight times.

It’s unclear if the relationship between the running back and head coach began deteriorating before or after Johnson went to Leach with his intentions to transfer. In the new age of college football free agency, we’re beginning to see star players from a number of programs hit the market in search of greener pastures.

NIL opportunities have made it more difficult for teams to hold onto key contributors, a trend that will continue until the NCAA decides to put some restrictions on the transfer process.

Most players try to transition from their respective programs with as little controversy as possible. Johnson opted to start a fire with his noisy departure. It’s safe to say he’ll be finding a new home for his senior year because a return to Starkville is probably out of the cards.
