Dr. Fauci Expresses ‘Initial Positivity’ About MLB’s Plans To Begin Season In May

Yesterday, I brought you the story of how the development of an antibody test is a major step towards the resumption of the various professional sports leagues across the country.

Long story short, the biggest obstacle to having sports resume behind closed doors is the concern that one player getting infected would cause gameplay to be shut down again, reverting everything back to square one.

However, with an antibody test that can yield results in 15-minutes, sports leagues operating in a “bubble city” — which is what MLB is currently considering with the Phoenix area — would be able to test players prior to entry and then continue to test them as the weeks passed, thus allowing them to keep a close eye on everyone’s health.

And according to recent reports, Dr. Fauci and “several government officials” are initially “positive” about MLB’s current plan.

One important point is that several government agencies and officials have already been apprised of the plan, and have responded with initial positivity. According to a person with direct knowledge, Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci is one of those officials.

Many in the medical community believe that rapid testing could be available by May or June that would enable careful screening of those in baseball’s semi-quarantine. [via SNY]

While sports remain at the bottom of the priority totem pole right now, the fact that both sports leagues and government officials are beginning to plan the next steps forward bodes well for the greater state of our society.
