Georgia Tech freshman Drew Burgess has proven to be one of the most impactful players of the college baseball season. The outfielder currently leads the nation in home runs with nine through his first eight games on campus.

Burgess did most of that damage in a Tuesday night matchup with in-state foe Georgia State, smacking four dingers in a historic performance. He set a Yellow Jackets program record in the process.

Burgess arrived in Atlanta as one of the top prospects from the high school ranks. He’s proven those projections true over the first two weeks of his debut season.

Hitting leadoff for the Jackets, he’s posted a .441 average while racking up 20 RBIs.

After making his presence known to Georgia Tech supporters over his first handful of games, he officially introduced himself to the rest of the college baseball world on Tuesday.

Drew Burgess had a coming out party with the Yellow Jackets facing Georgia State.

He wasted no time at all, belting a 452-foot bomb in at-bat No. 1.

The result was more of the same in his second plate appearance as he sent another Georgia State delivery sailing over the outfield fence.

After a walk in his third trip to the dish, he’d turn on another pitch in his next AB.

That’s 3-3, with 3 HRs for those counting along at home.

Finally, Burgess capped his epic performance with a homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to set a school record.

Drew Burgess celebrated the showing in reptilian fashion.

As has been a tradition around the Georgia Tech program since 2022, the player of the game receives a rubber lizard mask in the locker room celebration.

Embrace the lizard!!

Burgess was the obvious choice for Player of the Game honors with his record setting night, and he celebrated accordingly.

Final line: 4-4, 4 HRS, 6 RBIs. What a night!
