Stephen F. Austin tight end Gerard Edimo may never play college football again. Head coach Colby Carthel said he suffered an injury that might end his career on a dirty play against Prairie View A&M.
He did not hold back his thoughts on what happened.
Tremaine Jackson does not see eye-to-eye with Carthel. Regardless of whether the tackle was dirty or not, it likely ended Edimo’s college football career.
Stephen F. Austin tight end Gerard Edimo suffered a (potential) career-ending injury.
As a three-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2023, Gerard Edimo began his career at the University of South Florida. The 6-foot-5, 232-pound tight end spent only one year in Tampa and took a redshirt. And then he entered the transfer portal.
Stephen F. Austin, an FCS program, gave him his next opportunity. Edimo played in only four games in 2024. He broke out as a redshirt sophomore in 2025, but mostly as a blocker. His teammates voted him as a team captain in 2025.
Edimo was off to a strong start this season. He caught a career-high eight passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns through the first four weeks.
Unfortunately, his season is over and his career is now in jeopardy. Edimo suffered a leg injury during the first quarter of last Saturday’s game against Prairie View A&M on a play that might be his last.
Carthel said he “got his leg near yanked off the bone” and will “probably never play another snap of football.” He also labeled the tackle as the “second dirties, most unsportsmanlike play” he has ever seen in his 27 years of coaching college football.

As of this writing, Gerard Edimo has not addressed the incident. His head coach spoke on his behalf.

Not only does Colby Carthel think the defensive player made a dirty tackle, he said the player who made the tackle got up and made fun of Edimo as the injured captain was helped off of the field. The entire thing happened right in front of the Lumberjacks’ bench. The officials did not throw a flag. It was not penalized.

Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson responded to the allegations. He did not appreciate how Carthel handled the situation.
“It’s unfortunate that an injury took place and our prayers are with Gerard Edimo and his family. We pray for a speedy recovery and a successful return.
Eric Zachery is not only a good player, he is a good person, great student and one of the best people in our program!! We will not allow anyone to attack him or his character because of a play in a game.
I haven’t received a call from anyone pertaining to this play, nor did anyone say anything to me after the game. Don’t get on the internet and attack any of my kids!! We coach them the right way and they play the right way!!”
Jackson would prefer to speak directly to anyone who has a problem with him or his program. For Carthel to go straight to the media with a scathing rant against his players rubbed him the wrong way.
