Did Giants Owner John Mara Jinx The Team With His ‘We’re Back’ Comments? The Data Suggests So

Last season, the New York Giants and their fans were feeling good, if not great, thanks to the hiring of Brian Daboll.

After about a decade in the wilderness following their 2011 Super Bowl title, the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator not only made the team competitive again — they made the playoffs and won a Wild Card round game — but he also seemed to turn Daniel Jones into a legitimate franchise quarterback.

The Giants’ front office certainly thought so, at least, as they signed him to a four-year, $160 million contract extension during the offseason.

This year, however, the tide has not only turned but has seemingly flipped completely. Only the 1-7 Carolina Panthers and 1-8 Arizona Cardinals have worse records than the 2-7 Giants, who comfortably look among the worst teams in the league.

So, what happened? Did Brian Daboll somehow forget how to coach? Did Daniel Jones turn back into a pumpkin? Or did team owner John Mara curse them by declaring that the G-Men were “back” after their Wild Card win over the Minnesota Vikings?

Since that quote, as pointed out by SNY‘s Connor Hughes, the Giants are 2-8 since then, with their only two wins coming against the Cardinals (in a furious comeback) and Washington Commanders. Furthermore, as pointed out by Hughes, the Giants have lost six of those eight games by two-plus possessions and four of the eight by three-plus possessions.

In other words, they’ve not only been losing but they’ve been getting whooped.

Unfortunately for the Giants, things went from bad to worse over the weekend as it appears as though they’ve lost Jones for the season to a torn ACL. They now have to prepare third-string QB Tommy Devito to take on the Cowboys in Dallas next weekend.

Given that he won Coach of the Year in his first season and he’s now without his top two QBs, it’s tough to imagine that Daboll’s job is in jeopardy. However, things are going south fast, which makes the potential of his dismissal possible given the team’s current trajectory.
