The New York Giants have taken a step to fortify their backfield by signing running back James Robinson amidst a contract standoff with star player Saquon Barkley.

With Barkley not expected to join the team for the start of training camp, the Giants have moved swiftly to secure additional depth at the running back position.

The team’s decision to sign Robinson was announced on Friday afternoon, although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet.

Robinson had previously signed with the New England Patriots during the offseason, but he was released in June following concerns about his health and potential contributions to the team. However, the Giants seem confident in his abilities, and his performance during training camp will likely determine his role within the roster.

In addition to the newly acquired James Robinson, the Giants’ current 90-man roster includes running backs Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, and Eric Gray, a fifth-round pick.

James Robinson’s impressive rookie season with the Jaguars showcased his potential, with 1,070 rushing yards on 240 carries and 10 total touchdowns, accompanied by 49 receptions for 344 yards. However, injuries took a toll on his performance later in his career, and he has been working to regain his form.

At the age of 24, Robinson is eager to revitalize his career and make a lasting impact with his new team, the Giants.

Meanwhile, the situation with Saquon Barkley remains tense, as the star running back and the Giants failed to reach a contract agreement before the Monday deadline. As a result, Barkley is not expected to participate in the upcoming training camp.

The addition of James Robinson brings both talent and depth to the Giants’ running back corps, ensuring that they have multiple options in the backfield.
