Mike Gundy was fired as Oklahoma State football coach during a disastrous 2025 season. His tenure ended after more than two decades on the sidelines.

Gundy is now asking for the Cowboys‘ support. He pushed for Stillwater to help his son Gunnar Gundy as he starts a new lawncare business.

Both Gundy’s have direct ties to the university as players and coaches. Neither was able to survive the most recent season.

The Cowboys went 3-9 in 2024. Mike Gundy was fired after a 1-2 start to the ’25 campaign. Gunnar Gundy followed his father out the door.

Mike Gundy’s exit was ugly.

Much of the drama was linked to his sons. Gavin Gundy, the coach’s oldest son, ripped the program for turning on his father in 2025.

“Let’s cut the BS: Mike Gundy IS Oklahoma State football. Period. No debate. No asterisks. No ‘yeah, but.’ He is the reason this program has national respect, trophies in the case, and games worth bragging about.”

Mike Gundy played football at OSU. He is also the program’s all-time winningest coach. Gavin believed he’d received the short end of the stick. His alma mater was not loyal.

That may or may not be the case. While Gundy did make 18 straight bowl games from Year 2 to Year 19, his program had clearly fallen off towards the latter part of his career.

The Cowboys won three games in 2024. They went 1-11 in 2025. Gundy was 4-11 over his last 15 games.

Optics in his final season were poor. The head coach was seen in a photo with Oregon fans taken before or during a blowout loss. That came after he inadvertently offended the fanbase with comments on lacking NIL support.

A feeling was presented that he simply did not care about the team’s struggles.

Gavin Gundy made things worse with his antics on social media. His brother would add more fuel to the fire after leaving the school.

Gunnar Gundy started a lawncare business.

Gundy, the middle son, was a quarterback for the Cowboys from 2021-2023. He turned down two scholarship offers to play for his dad’s alma mater.

During those three seasons, he threw for 449 yards as a backup. His most memorable moment was unrelated to his play.

Gundy spent his final college football season at DII Emporia State. He then joined the Oklahoma State coaching staff in 2025.

Obviously, it didn’t go well as his dad was dismissed three games into the year. After the season ended, Gunnar Gundy dumped his Cowboys gear for cheap in an online fire sale.

Some read into that as a way of dropping his Oklahoma State affiliation. While it may have simply been a closet cleanse, it came off as a salty reaction to his father’s firing.

Now, Gundy has entered a new profession. His dad asked his former fanbase to support.

The response to that promo was mixed.

“With how much money that city has given you, he should be cutting that grass for free,” one follower wrote on X.

Others showed support, with this fan saying, “This is awesome. Props to him for starting his own business and getting his hands dirty.”

It will be interesting to see how Stillwater responds. Gunnar Gundy hopes to regain any lost support as he pushes forward in a new career field.
