Former USC running back OJ Simpson passed this week, succumbing to a battle with cancer. The Heisman Trophy Trust mourned his death with a post on social media on Thursday, remembering his time on the field with the Trojans.

That response sparked an immediate online debate amongst college football followers.

On the gridiron, Simpson shined. Across two seasons in Los Angeles, he was twice named an All-American, capping his 1968 season by winning the sport’s most prestigious award.

In that incredible campaign, he rushed for over 1,700 yards while totaling 22 touchdowns to lead the nation. He’d buoy that college success into a first-round draft selection, being chosen No. 1 overall by the Buffalo Bills.

But while his football career is one of note, Simpson is most recognized for his connection to the 1994 murders of former wife Nicole Brown and friend Ron Goldman.

Many in the media commented on that past while addressing the news, maybe none more than ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap.

“I think we have to keep in perspective here, yes, he was acquitted, but anyone who has seriously looked at the evidence … would have to come to the conclusion that he was a murderer. And so am I filled with sorrow today? I’m not.”

The Heisman Trophy opted to disregard that part of OJ Simpson’s life in its post.

That response sparked an immediate debate in the comments section.

“So, you took Reggie Bush’s Heisman back because he got a few bucks but you’re publicly mourning the death of OJ Simpson?”

“This is crazy. BTW, give Reggie his Heisman back.”

“This a parody account now?”

“Mayyyyybe just sit this one out?”

Many note the removal of another former USC running back’s Heisman Trophy in Reggie Bush. Bush was found to have accepted impermissible benefits during his time with the program following an NCAA investigation.

While all is now allowed in the world of NIL, he’s yet to have the honor returned.

Others replied with outrage given Simpson’s checkered past.

The tailback’s football accomplishments were impressive, but it seems many don’t believe they should outweigh other aspects of his life.
