The junior varsity high school football game between Forsyth and Parkland required police intervention. A nasty brawl spilled into the North Carolina parking lot so pepper spray was deployed.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt!
Both high school football programs promise to take the appropriate action in response to the incident on Thursday. The varsity game will still be played on Friday as planned.
West Forsyth and Parkland did not complete the junior varsity high school football game.
Parkland and West Forsyth’s varsity high school football teams are scheduled to close out the regular season on Friday. Their game was in jeopardy due to an incident during (and after) the junior varsity game on the night prior.
West Forsyth High School is located in the small Winston-Salem suburb of Clemmons, North Carolina. It enrolls approximately, 2,300 students in Grades 9-12. Parkland High School is located in Winston-Salem. It enrolls approximately 1,600 students.
The latter traveled to the former on Thursday for the final junior varsity football game of the year. The game was called early during the second half due to a fight that broke out among the players. You can see images of the on-field altercation here.
I have yet to confirm additional details of the incident. I don’t know what prompted the scuffle, nor do I know who was at fault. However, I can confirm that multiple punches (or open-hand swipes) were thrown, and that the initial pushing and shoving very quickly escalated to a full-blown brawl. Coaches, officials and administrators from both schools had to step in to break it up.
After a brief moment of discussion, all of the involved parties agreed to end the game early. It was canceled due to “behavior of players on the field.”
Pepper spray was deployed to break up a brawl in the parking lot.
Not only did the brawl bring players from both sidelines onto the field, it also spilled into the parking lot. Police deputies got involved with the altercation but the players would not listen. Deputies deployed pepper spray as a means of deescalation.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, there were no reported injuries at the time of the incident. No arrests were made.
A video of the parking lot shows the ugly scene. Players from both teams converged on each other and started swinging. Nearby fans and coaches rushed over to break up the fight. Officers started spraying on the players.

Both schools will continue to investigate the incident. Justice will be served.
“WS/FCS is investigating the fight that took place following the West Forsyth vs. Parkland junior varsity game last night. We are examining all available pictures and information and will respond with proper discipline as outlined in our Code of Character, Conduct, and Support. We are grateful to our law enforcement partners who assisted last night, and we will continue to work with them as they conduct their own investigation. The safety of our students and families remains our number one priority. We will evaluate the situation and announce a decision about tonight’s varsity game later today.”
As a result of Thursday’s ugly incident, West Forsyth and Parkland decided to move their varsity football game up by an hour from 7:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The school district also says that “law enforcement will be present” and that “there will be heightened security measures as well.”
