A high school football team in Alabama left its opponent completely baffled during the first round of the AHSAA playoffs by running an iteration of the ‘Snow Globe’ play made famous by the Kansas City Chiefs. Their ‘Ring Around the Rosie’ trickery worked to perfection!
Fort Payne High School, located in northeast Alabama near the Georgia state line, faced Mortimer Jordan. The Wildcats had 2nd-and-10 from the 12-yard-line.
At first, they gathered together for a standard pre-snap huddle. And then it took a twist.
Fort Payne’s offensive huddle started spinning in circles, just like Kansas City against Las Vegas last fall.
The Chiefs also tried a similar play against the Eagles in the Super Bowl. West Virginia also ran the unusual trick play for a two-point conversion against Penn State earlier this year.
The Wildcats began with the spinning huddle. By the time that they set up at the line, the defense had no idea what to do. They were even more confused when Fort Payne shifted its offensive line to a heavy bunch formation on the right side.
With the defense keyed to the strong side, the Wildcats actually threw back to left. Their tight end slipped out over the middle without anyone noticing and scored.
To see the Chiefs’ trickery reach the high school football level is a lot of fun. To see it go for a touchdown in the playoffs is pretty savage.
Fort Payne had all season to break out the ‘Snow Globe’ play and chose to save it for the biggest game of the entire year. The Wildcats also went on to win by 17, so the trick play was ultimately negligible in the grand scheme of things.
Even still, you can’t help but appreciate just how ridiculous that the play looks… until it works. The more often that it is run, the better!
