The Iowa offensive coordinator job is officially live online. The school posted the opening to its website on Wednesday, sparking a major reaction from the college football world online.

Many are posting their hilarious “resumes” on social media, referencing their Madden stats as qualification.

The Hawkeyes decided to part ways with Brian Ferentz, son of head coach Kirk Ferentz, in the middle of the 2023 season. Though his resignation was handed over in October, he was able to finish out the year on the sidelines.

Iowa’s offensive unit was abysmal this year, ranking dead last in the nation at just 238.8 yards of total offense per game. The Hawkeyes were the only team in the country to average less than 270 YPG, putting that lowly mark in perspective.

The output came following a nomadic ’22 season, which led to a contract amendment from the school. Ferentz had performance-based guidelines written into his deal stating that his group needed to score 25 PPG.

The Iowa offensive coordinator also took a pay cut to keep that job, decreasing his salary to $850K.

The Hawkeyes must reach a mere 25 points per game — by any means, including defense and special teams — in 2023. Additionally, the Hawkeyes must reach seven wins, which includes a potential bowl game. Ferentz accepted a $50,000 salary decrease to $850,000 for the season. If Ferentz fails to meet either of the two incentives, his contract will officially terminate on June 30, 2024.

Calling the incentives manageable is an understatement… Iowa has not won fewer than seven games in a full season since 2012. The 25 points per game mark would have ranked No. 85 nationally in 2022.

If he failed to reach the 25 PPG mark, his contract would be terminated.

He did, and it was.

Iowa was constantly in the headlines, making history at the sportsbooks for ridiculously low over/under totals. Somehow, the under kept hitting, no matter how hard Vegas tried!

While the embarrassing production did produce some good – a record setting opportunity for punter Tory Taylor, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Ferentz.

Iowa opens offensive coordinator job to public

The Iowa university website is now advertising that OC opening, allowing anyone to apply. Given the awful results from the last few seasons, everyone seems to think they’re qualified!

Fans immediately began posting their “credentials” on social media.

“Perfect! In one of my NCAA ’14 dynasties, my offenses average 78.4 PPG, 969.3 YPG!”

“I’ll send them my Madden stats.”

Unfortunately, those applications likely won’t be considered. Rumors are swirling that Former UCF and Nebraska head coach Scott Frost is a frontrunner for the job. He should have more than enough experience running (real) offensive units.

As others noted in their replies, it’s likely a university requirement to post the job online.

That hasn’t stopped fans from actually applying!

We’ll see who the Hawkeyes settle on this offseason. Until then, the 10-win(!) football team will prep for its bowl game against Tennessee.
