Ja Morant found himself surrounded by controversy once again on Wednesday following the release of a report by the Washington Post. That report referred to a pair of incidents that took place last year.

Morant’s lawyer and agent have since responded to the release, sparking a response from NBA fans online.

The Memphis star was involved in two altercations last summer, one of which took place at a mall and the other during a pickup basketball game.

The Washington Post brought light to those past incidents while attempting to give readers more detail on what happened in each.

The first altercation involved his threatening a security guard, which came after Morant’s mother got into it with an employee at a shoes store inside a Memphis mall. She reportedly called her son after that argument.

Two months after the loss to Golden State, Morant’s mother was at a Finish Line shoe store at a Memphis mall when she got in a dispute with a store employee, according to a Memphis Police report obtained by The Post. She called Morant, who arrived shortly after with a group of as many as nine other people.

Confronted by the director of mall security, Morant and his friends refused the security guard’s demands to leave the mall parking lot. Police arrived and a “verbal confrontation” escalated, the report says, until someone in the group allegedly pushed the security director in the head.

“As the group was leaving the premises … Ja Morant said, ‘Let me find out what time he gets off,’” police wrote in the report.

But it gets worse.

A second incident accused Ja Morant of “repeatedly punching a teenage boy in the head and threatening him with a gun” during a pickup basketball game.

Neither shines a positive light on the NBA star, who recently announced a partnership with Powerade, a decision the sports drink might already be regretting.

Now, we’re hearing his side of the story.

Ja Morant’s lawyer and agent have each come out to shut down the “defamatory” story.

Fans quickly responded to the statements.

One fan wrote, “Good for Ja. Defend your name and reputation. Pathetic what the media has stooped to for clicks.”

Another took things a step further, saying, “Time to bring on those Defamation of Character lawsuits!!”

The statement from his lawyer did note that they would “seek legal recourse immediately.”

Others, however, aren’t completely sold. This person commented, “Dozens of Morant’s friends and family will swear he acted in self-defense. Well then it must be true…”

Unfortunately, it’s not the first time Ja Morant has been entwined in controversy. Earlier this year, he got into an incident after a game against the Indiana Pacers. That, too, was said to have involved a gun.

Hopefully he can keep his name out of the headlines as the NBA playoffs approach. The Grizzlies are currently seeded the second-best team in the Western Conference.
