Powerade unveiled a recent partnership with an NBA star on Wednesday, dropping an awesome video online to commemorate the signing.

Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Fans are now reacting to that fact online as they post responses to social media.

The basketballer partnering with the sports drink is Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant. The dynamic scorer has been a superstar this season, leading the Grizzlies to the second-best record in the Western Conference.

Memphis is looking to not only make it back to the NBA playoffs, but to win a championship. Morant, the team’s top scorer and assists man, is the most important piece to those title aspirations.

A former No. 2 overall pick, he’s certainly lived up to the billing, which has allowed him to land a number of notable sponsorship opportunities.

On Wednesday, he became the first athlete to partner with Powerade in five years.

While the announcement was supposed to represent a shift back into the world of major athlete representation, the timing of the partnership came at the worst time imaginable.

Shortly after the clip was dropped on social media, reports began to surface of an altercation between Ja Morant and a 17-year-old boy.

That report claims that the basketball star punched the boy “12 or 13 times” during a pickup game, then threatened the 17-year-old with a gun.

Morant disputes the claim, but that hasn’t removed the cloud of controversy that seemingly follows the guard.

Fans online couldn’t help but comment on the entire situation.

It really couldn’t have been worse timing for the announcement. Others quickly chimed in with their responses on social media.

Tough break for the sports drink brand.
