New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom made his long-awaited return to the diamond yesterday in the team’s Spring Training action.

The Cy Young winner threw two innings of scoreless baseball in an appearance versus the defending American League champion Astros.

The appearance was deGrom’s first since last July, when he felt some abnormal right arm fatigue midway through the season. That uncomfortable feeling unfortunately never left, and the All-Star was forced to sit out the remainder of the year.

Prior the injury, deGrom had been on an absolute tear, racking up 146 strikeouts in just 92 innings of work. The righty had produced an ERA of 1.08 and looked destined for more offseason accolades.

Well, it looks like he’s picking up right where he left off.

The ace tallied five strikeouts over those two innings of work on Tuesday, allowing one hit, no runs, and no free passes. More impressively, he absolutely dominated the first inning of his return, mowing down the first three batters he faced.

Mets Players, Coaches Loving Every Minute Of Jacob deGrom’s Return

As expected, deGrom’s teammates and coaching staff were very supportive of his return to the bump. They were also very eager to see how he performed.

It didn’t take long for the team to see that he’s back to original form.

deGrom was getting pointers from fellow teammate and Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. After cruising through that seamless first inning, Scherzer told deGrom to “mix in a curveball” to start the second frame.

He does, tossing another strike before peering back over to the dugout for approval.

When the matchup ended, deGrom was the talk of the postgame. General manager Buck Showalter spoke on the impressive return, joking that deGrom “still has a shot” to make the Mets roster.

We’re all hoping that deGrom can stay healthy this season. He and Scherzer should team up to create one of the most dominant duos on the mound.

New York has its eyes set on a World Series appearance, but they’ll have to get through defending champ Atlanta first. It should be fun to watch, and much of that is due to deGrom’s presence on the field.
