Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark is already the women’s leader in points scored, recently breaking Kelsey Plum’s mark of 3,527 points this senior season. Now, another record is on the table.

Pete Maravich is the NCAA’s all-time scoring leader, notching 3,667 points as a member of the LSU Tigers. Pistol Pete’s son chimed in on Clark’s pursuit earlier this month.

Jaeson called the race an “apples to oranges” comparison.

“They are two totally different records,” he said when asked about the possibility of his father’s mark falling. Why the viewpoint?

He says Pete Maravich was at a disadvantage due to the era he played in as it relates to freshman status. Pistol Pete wasn’t able to suit up for LSU’s varsity team in his first year, giving him just three seasons to rack up his NCAA total.

More from USA Today:

“I look at my dad’s record, and if somebody breaks it, it’s almost like two totally different records just because of the circumstances and the rules and everything else. I think they had said if he had played four years, he would have had close to 5,000. So, I said this last year: It’s kind of like an apple-to-orange comparison.”

Jaeson Maravich took a similar stance towards Antoine Davis’s attempt to unseat Pistol Pete.

The Detroit Mercy star finished his career with 3,664 points, falling just short of breaking the record. Jaeson didn’t believe it would’ve been a legitimate mark due to his playing five college seasons.

In a viral Facebook rant, he ripped the idea of a 14-19 Detroit Mercy team landing a CBI postseason bid, which would’ve given him one last shot at breaking the record.

That didn’t happen, leaving Davis three points shy.

Despite the opinion on the scoring mark, Jaeson Maravich believes he father would’ve been a fan of Caitlin Clark’s.

“I think my dad would’ve been a big fan of hers. She’s just so much fun to watch.”

Clark is 50 points shy of Pete Maravich’s NCAA total with two regular season games to play. If she doesn’t get the mark by season’s end, she should do so in the postseason.
