The Jake Retzlaff case took a massive turn on Monday following reports of the quarterback’s plans to transfer from BYU. He’ll now look ahead to a suspension free start with a new college football program.
Recent reports suggest the passer already knows his next destination. Those claims also describe that landing spot as a “major college football” player.
Retzlaff started last season with the Cougars, developing into a potential NFL Draft pick. After throwing for nearly 3,000 yards a year ago, he’d planned to lead the offense once again with hopes of bringing a Big 12 Championship to Provo.
That’s since changed amid a turbulent offseason. Retzlaff was accused of assault by a woman citing a 2023 incident. His season, and career, then both hung in the balance.
Retzlaff is gearing up for his final college football season. Had the allegations been proven true, he’d likely say goodbye to football moving forward. Even if he’d been found not guilty, his future at the NCAA level was in limbo.
Retzlaff denied the assault claim but admitted to having consensual sex. The admission was a direct violation of BYU’s honor code.
Rumors of a seven-game suspension from the Cougars surfaced on Sunday, as did the quarterback’s transfer intentions. He’d rather play for another school than sit on the sidelines for half of his senior year.
Jake Retzlaff already knows where he’s going…
So we’re told. The Deseret News reports that his next destination is a “major college football program” that’s “in desperate need of an experienced college quarterback.”
No other details on the program have been revealed, though the story did say it expects to hear a commitment announcement as early as next week.
By transferring, he’d avoid the BYU honor code suspension. Until Monday, the lawsuit remained. That, too, has now changed.

The case was dismissed according to a report from ESPN. Both parties “agreed jointly” to move on and put the situation behind them.
With the case now dismissed, and the honor code no longer pending, Jake Retzlaff could theoretically suit up immediately for his final college football season. We should know where he’ll be playing very soon if the rumors are true.
