Places that sell booze in Boston have been flooded by Scottish fans who’ve kept them very, very busy while in the city for the World Cup. That includes a liquor store that’s become a hot spot for those visitors thanks to an inadvertently hilarious name linked to a slang word in their native country.
Fans from dozens of countries around the globe are invading North America for the World Cup, but there aren’t many nations that have managed to make more of a mark than the Scottish supporters who began to descend upon Boston last week.
The city got a glimpse at what was in store when multiple flights carrying those diehards from Scotland ran out of beer before they landed, and they’ve managed to put a serious dent in the supply at bars and liquor stores around the city (including some establishments that had to scramble to restock after running out of certain types of alcohol).
There’s also one packie on the border of Beacon Hill and the West End that’s found itself at the center of some unexpected attention thanks to a seemingly innocent name that is anything but that in the land the Tartan Army hails from.
Scottish World Cup fans are making the pilgrimage to a liquor store in Boston because its name is slang for “poop”
Jobi Liquors has been open for business for more than four decades at 170 Cambridge Street in Boston, and it is one of the many package stores that have reaped the benefits of the arrival of Scottish soccer fans.
However, as the Daily Record reports, some of those supporters have gone out of their way to visit it due to a name that refers to something else in their country: poop.
Owner Jimmy Ryan says Jobi is an amalgamation of the names of his mom and dad, Joan and Billy, and prior to the World Cup invasion, he was unaware that “jobbie” (or “jobby”) is commonly used to refer to doing your business on the porcelain throne (it’s seemingly derived from the work that goes into the “job” you do when you sit down on it).

Ryan said “thousands” of fans have stopped by to take pictures outside the shop and have also been keeping him busy inside it, noting he’s “constantly been having to order in more beers” thanks to the volume he’s been selling.
