When Kent State men’s basketball takes on Akron in the Mid-American Conference Tournament final on Saturday night, the Golden Flashes will be down four crucial players. The team announced a suspension on Saturday morning over a snapchat video on Friday night.

Among the best rivalries in college sports, the one between the two northeast Ohio universities flies under the radar, but there is so much bad blood. They are located about 10 miles apart, they both compete in the MAC, and they hate each other.

Earlier this year, Kent State beat Akron by two points in Akron. After the game, the Golden Flashes ran over to the Zips’ student section and tried to square-up.

Middle fingers and expletives were flying as the victors waved goodbye right in their faces.

Although it ended without physical altercation, it made for one of the wildest celebrations in college basketball history. It was absolutely bananas.

Now, exactly one month later, the two teams are set to meet again. Akron beat Toledo to reach the final earlier in the day on Friday and Kent State beat Ohio later that evening.

After the win, several Golden Flashes got very hype in the locker room. However, they made the mistake of broadcasting the explicit celebration on Snapchat.

In the video, the players can be heard singing “F**k Akron” along with a diss track that expresses just how little they like the Zips. The song, which is actually extremely lit, even calls out specific players on the Akron roster.

The beef is very, very real. Take a listen:

Because of the video, the school has suspended four players. Starting guard Malique Jacobs will miss the first half of the MAC Championship vs. Akron, as will Julius Rollins and Cli’Ron Hornbreak.

D.J. Johnson, who took the video, has been suspended indefinitely.

“I’m disappointed this occurred,” said MAC commissioner Dr. Job Steinbrecher. “This does not represent the values of Kent State or the Mid-American Conference. However, I commend the leadership of Kent State for being proactive in addressing this matter and collaborating with my office to bring this situation to resolution.”

Although the diss track is extremely hype, and the actions in the video probably occur in locker rooms across the country in all sports, the fact that it was posted for the world to see is the problem. You simply can’t do that. Big mistake.
