Kim Mulkey is one of the greatest women’s college basketball coaches of all-time. However, she often draws criticism for how she approaches the game and how she treats her players, in addition to her off-court opinions.

That was a big focus of a recent profile in the Washington Post that the 61-year-old preemptively deemed a “hit piece.”

Although the article was ultimately much ado about nothing, it did a good job of peeling back the curtain on why Mulkey is Mulkey. Many former players, including Brittney Griner, have talked about their experience with the four-time national champion coach in a way that does not inspire admiration.

She is often brash and expects her players to walk, talk and act a certain way— even if they might think or feel differently. Mulkey is frequently labeled as rugged and harsh. Those categorizations are frequently framed as barbarous or tyrannical by those outside of her program.

All of this goes to say that a lot of people don’t like Kim Mulkey.

Flau’jae Johnson’s mom is not one of those people.

Kia Brooks, who appeared to take a shot at Angel Reese for carrying an embarrassing GPA amid internal drama earlier in the season, offered a strong statement of support for her daughter’s head coach. She appreciates how Mulkey is not going to “baby” Johnson and will “make her a woman.”

Her belief is that people who do not know someone should not judge the person they do not know. In this case, she is referring to Mulkey. Brooks finds all of the “40 and 50-year-old people” who “throw daggers at a woman they’ve never even spoken to” to be very weird. She trusts LSU’s head coach with Johnson.

Brooks is not alone in her stance. There is a clear divide in how people view Mulkey.

Many do not like her. Many, like Brooks, appreciate her unapologetic approach.
