  • Jimmy Garoppolo has been with the San Francisco 49ers since 2017.
  • The team is set to begin a new era with Trey Lance as their starting QB.
  • Head coach Kyle Shanahan says he “expects” Jimmy G. to be traded.

As someone who has watched endless hours of bad quarterback play while watching the New York Jets, trust me when I say that Jimmy Garoppolo is not a bad quarterback. Is he a first-ballot Hall of Famer? Absolutely not. But is he a scrub, as Stephen A. Smith would probably put it? No chance.

During his seven-year career thus far — only two of which have seen him start 15 or more games, to be fair — Jimmy G has completed 67.7% of his passes for 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions.

Regardless of his above-average play, the 49ers are eager to begin the Trey Lance era. So eager, in fact, that head coach Kyle Shanahan is openly admitting that he “expects” the 30-year-old former New England Patriot to be traded in the coming months.

“Nothing’s changed since that surgery,” Shanahan said to reporters on Tuesday. “Where we were at before that, and then he got the surgery, so everything went on hold. I expect him at some time, most likley, to be traded, but who knows? That’s not a guarantee. It’s been exactly on hold when that happened. When he’s healthy, we’ll see what happens.”

Regardless of whether or not Garoppolo finds a new home before the start of the 2022 season, the San Francisco 49ers — who competed in last season’s NFC Championship game — will likely be turning to Trey Lance, who they traded up to draft with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, as their starting QB.
