The Red River Showdown has not been friendly to quarterback Spencer Rattler. During last year’s Oklahoma – Texas matchup, the young QB was benched but ultimately re-entered the game to help lead the Sooners to a four-overtime win.

This wasn’t the case during last weekend’s thriller at the Cotton Bowl.

Rattler was pulled from the game after two early turnovers in favor of true freshman and five-star recruit Caleb Williams. Williams scored on his first play from scrimmage and was electric during the Sooners’ come-from-behind win.

Rattler did check back into the game for a two-point conversion, but many are questioning Rattler’s future in Norman following his benching. There’s also the drama surrounding the fact that Rattler was nowhere to be found during Oklahoma’s celebrations on Saturday.

Oklahoma has looked extremely gettable all season long and Rattler, the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, hasn’t looked to be anywhere close to elite like most college football fans expected him to be. After Williams’ great outing against Texas, plenty of OU fans are calling for him to be the starter moving forward.

On Tuesday afternoon, head coach Lincoln Riley shared an update about Rattler’s status revealing that he gave his QB the day off on Monday.

Riley also delivered some remarks about how it’s “not easy” being a quarterback at Oklahoma and that there’s always “bumps in the road.”

“It’s not easy for a young guy,” he said, via SI.com. “This guy gets painted different publicly than what he really is. It’s not easy competing on this stage and platform, and it can make it tougher when things don’t go your way.”

“Everybody thinks they want this, but it’s not easy. The guys that I’ve coached here, they all had those moments. It’s not a smooth, easy ride. There’s always bumps in the road.”

Rattler To The Transfer Portal?

What this sounds like to me is that Rattler is completely fed up and frustrated with the situation. He wants to be the guy, but right now, he’s not anywhere close to being the guy. Riley seeing it fit to give Rattler the day off two full days after his benching says quite a bit.

It’s fair to suggest that Rattler has a bad attitude about the situation, but guys that get frustrated and don’t get their way, well, now they have the transfer portal on their side.

It wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see Rattler’s name in the transfer portal sooner rather than later if things continue to trend toward Williams being the QB moving forward in Norman.
