The LSU baseball team capped a national championship season on Monday by beating SEC rival Florida on the diamond. The win gave the program its seventh title, but it wasn’t the only win the school captured in Omaha.

Fans of the university participated in a local Jell-O shot competition, putting up an unrivaled performance. Those LSU supporters purchased more than 68,000 shots by College World Series’ end.

No one was surprised to see the Tigers win the crown in the annual contest held at Rocco’s Pizzeria and Cantina. The school is synonymous with heavy drinking, as are many throughout the SEC.

I mean, this is a group that once drank the Rose Bowl out of beer before the game even started.

But while LSU was the favorite upon entering the CWS, nobody expected them to break the previous Jell-O shot record with such ease.

That prior mark was held by Ole Miss, who won last season’s competition with a total of 18,777 shots. LSU bested that total by more than 50,000 shots.

The shots, which are purchased at $5.00 each, come out to nearly $345,000 in sales. Part of that incredible total came from just one LSU donor, who purchased $44,400 worth this weekend.

This, coming after another Tigers donor bought 6,000 shots from the bar the week before.

A portion of all Jell-O shot proceeds, which totaled over $475K, will be donated to food banks for all eight of the College World Series’ participating teams, so in the end, everyone wins.

With the wins both on and off the field, the 2023 season represents the third straight year in which the national champion’s fanbase has won the Jell-O shot challenge, with Mississippi State and Ole Miss pulling off the feat the two years prior.
