The San Jose Sharks missed the playoffs this season, but things are trending in the right direction thanks in no small part to the contributions of Macklin Celebrini. The 19-year-old phenom broke the franchise record for points in his second year in the NHL, and he ushered in the offseason by heading back to his former school for the Boston Marathon before angering some narcs with a keg stand that left a lot to be desired.

The Sharks headed into the 2025-26 NHL season hoping to snap a six-year playoff drought. That did not end up being the case, but San Jose finished with more wins than losses for the first time since 2019 during a breakout year for Macklin Celebrini, who finished with 45 goals and 70 assists to break the franchise record Joe Thornton set when he racked up 114 points during the 2006-07 campaign.

Celebrini finished in third place in the Calder Trophy voting last season (behind Dustin Wolf and runaway winner Lane Huston), but he emerged as a legitimate contender for Most Valuable Player honors during a breakout year where he cemented himself as one of the league’s most electric young talents.

The 19-year-old was selected by the Sharks with the first overall pick in 2024 in the wake of his only season at Boston University, and he headed back to Beantown for the sacred college drinking holiday that is known as “Marathon Monday.”

Unfortunately, he managed to attract some unwanted attention due to a lackluster keg stand that made the rounds online.

Macklin Celebrini had his spot blown up over a keg stand during the Boston Marathon

The state of Massachusetts designates the third Monday in April as Patriots’ Day, which is dedicated to the battles in Lexington and Concord that sparked the Revolutionary War.

That’s also the day the Boston Marathon is held each year, and most of the hundreds of thousands of students enrolled at the colleges and universities in the area use the race as an excuse to engage in a booze-fueled marathon of their own.

Celebrini decided to head back to the East Coast to partake in the festivities and appeared to end up at a house party somewhere near BU.

The former Terrier attracted some scrutiny for engaging in some underage drinking after he was filmed doing a keg stand, although the bulk of the backlash was reserved for his atrocious form (“Connor Bedard would never keg stand like that” was one of the more entertaining reactions I came across) as well as the newsboy hat that brought fashion critics out of the woodwork.

I would like to stress that I am not personally scandalized by the idea of an NHL player (who hails from a Canadian province where the drinking age is 19) crushing some beer alongside the countless underage drinkers who do the same thing in Boston on Marathon Monday. However, it is obviously not an ideal look for a franchise player.

This was also a lose-lose situation for Celebrini, as he probably would have gone just as viral if he’d crushed the keg stand instead of botching it.  He’s just the latest in a long line of professional athletes who’ve gotten a reminder that you need to tread carefully when you go out in public, but I have a feeling this will blow over pretty quickly.
