The Miami Marlins were without their third base coach Jody Reed after the top of the third inning.

Reed was on the business end of a freak injury when the former MLB 2nd basemen was struck by a foul ball that resulted in a broken leg after Miami Marlins right fielder Jesús Sánchez ripped one right at him.

Sánchez put oomph behind the ball but even so, it didn’t appear to be a serious injury at first. That was until Marlins manager Skip Schumaker told reporters that Jody would be out for a while after going in for an x-ray and discovering he’d suffered a broken leg.

This is unfortunate timing for Reed, career-wise. He played in the majors for 11 seasons between 1987 to 1997 after playing college ball at Florida State.

After retiring, he began coaching in the minor leagues back in 2007 but this was his first year as a base coach in the MLB.

This (almost) certainly won’t affect his standing with the Marlins but these are the dog days of Summer and it’s hard to get back in the swing of things with a lengthy break in July/August.

The Marlins currently trail the Braves in the NL East by 10 games and are 2-8 in their last 10. Maybe August is their time to turn things around.
