Mike Trout and his son Beckham shared an incredibly sweet moment together yesterday when they pulled Mike Trout’s rookie card from a 2009 Bowman Draft box.
Trout hasn’t featured in many games this season after suffering two meniscus tears to the same knee this year. I’ve torn the same meniscus twice and I have as good of an idea of anyone as to what Mike Trout has been going through and it’s zero fun, I can tell you that. But Mike Trout‘s recent surgery was declared a success and it is believed he’ll be ready for Opening Day 2025.
I say all of that because Trout’s young son Beckham hasn’t really gotten to see his dad take many at bats this season. And while he would’ve seen his dad play in the past and is certainly aware his father is a very big deal, his son is young and long-term memory isn’t fully developed yet. So there’s a small element of Beckham not realizing how big of a star his father is which makes this moment of them pulling Mike’s rookie card from a 2009 Bowman Draft Box even more special.
Mike shared this video with his son saying the goal is to pull a rookie card of his dad and they did exactly that:
Side note, and I suspect this startup idea exists or something similar to it, but it would be great if some company existed where you could have a card made of some Regular Joe and put inside a pack. Being able to gift trading card boxes to my buddies who have sons at the age where they’re obsessed with cards and then seeing them pull cards of their dads would be incredible.
This 2009 Bowman Draft rookie card could be worth up to a few thousand dollars, according to the ones for sale across various exchanges. But I’m not talking about that. Sell me a box with weak cards but let me send some company a photo of my friend and have them make a card with his ‘Dad Stats.’ I know they do this with Pokemon cards where people can create their own but I want to take it one step further and have it inside a pack so kids really think their dads are pros or super heroes like Mike Trout’s son did in this incredibly special moment.
Side note: where did the time go? How has Trout already been in the league for 14 season?! It doesn’t seem like all that long ago when the 3-time AL MVP was the hottest young player in the league. Time flies…
