Penn State Fires Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich Following Terrible Performance Vs. Michigan

Saturday felt like déjà vu for Penn State football fans, as the offense once again sputtered in a big game. And, after their 24-15 loss against Michigan, Penn State head coach James Franklin has decided to fire third-year offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

The news was first reported by Jon Sauber of the Centre Daily Times.

The Nittany Lions sit at 8-2 after losing to #3 Michigan on Saturday, with their only other loss coming to #1 Ohio State in late October. And, they have the 15th-ranked scoring offense in the country, averaging just under 38 points per game.

But, the offensive output against Ohio State and Michigan was simply not good enough. Highly-touted quarterback Drew Allar struggled in both games, completing less than 50% of his passes in each. And, the offense only mustered one touchdown in the two games combined that wasn’t in garbage time.

Yesterday’s offensive performance was especially concerning, as Drew Allar mustered just 70 passing yards for the entire game on 22 attempts. That’s an Iowa stat line. In both losses, the Nittany Lion offense had numerous chances to take the lead or tie the game in the 2nd half, and couldn’t do it. Frankly, they didn’t come close.

This will be an important hire for James Franklin. Penn State has been on the cusp of being a playoff team more often than not under the 10th-year head coach. But, they haven’t been able to get over the hump. With the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams next season, the Nittany Lions will be expected to qualify the majority of the time. If not, Franklin himself could be the next coach getting fired.

Running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider will assume playcalling duties for the team’s remaining games. They host Rutgers this upcoming Saturday.
