Collin Morikawa walks the course at the Travelers Championship.
Collin Morikawa finished third at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut over the weekend. A brutal lip-out on the 17th hole prevented him from a larger payday.
Morikawa finished one stroke behind leaders Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland. He was oh-so-close to joining that duo in a winner-take-all playoff.
It provided a bit of a sour end to an otherwise incredible final day. The golfer is likely happy with where he ended up, but the reality of what could’ve been is still painful.
Collin Morikawa’s lip-out proves costly at Travelers Championship.
Did not realize Morikawa was this close to being in the playoff as well.

Morikawa missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole that would’ve put him in a tie atop the leaderboard. That putt was halfway down before rolling out and to the right.
While he would birdie on 18 to close out the round, he finished one shot off the lead.
Scheffler and Hovland will compete in a Monday playoff for the championship. Morikawa will finish in third. Had the putt gone in, he’d be included in that group battling for the trophy and $3.6 million winnings. Instead, he’ll watch from home.
What is the third-place payout?
Collin Morikawa will still walk away with a $1.36 million payday from the Travelers Championship. That comes despite the lip-out.
He was able to get into contention with a fantastic final round.
Morikawa shot -1 on Thursday before getting hot. He recorded a 66 on Friday, a 64 on Saturday, and a field-best 61 on Sunday.
That -9 in Round 4 helped him skyrocket up the leaderboard. In the end, it wasn’t quite enough to get the victory.
He had a shot at the $3.6 million payout, but luck wasn’t on his side. And hey, things could’ve been much worse. Just ask JT Poston.
Something tells me he’ll more than happily take home his seven-figure consolation prize.
