  • Mitch Trubisky is a name being thrown around quite a bit in discussions about NFL free agency
  • One of those discussions led to some surprising comparisons today

We are just a few days away from free agency opening in the NFL. With that, much of the football world is beginning to consider not only where some of the biggest names available in free agency could land this offseason, but also how much they stand to make on their new contracts.

One of the free agents drawing a lot of attention right now is surprisingly Mitch Trubisky. There are a few teams that could be in the market for him to step in as their starting quarterback.

That potential interest led Tom Pelissero to discuss Trubisky as a player who could score a surprisingly big contract during free agency.

In that article, Pelissero had some unexpected comparisons for Trubisky.

Whatever the perception might be, Trubisky is a one-time Pro Bowl selection who was 29-21 (!) in parts of four seasons as the starter on a Bears team that lost before he took over and lost again after he left. Statistically in Years 2-4, Trubisky compares favorably to the likes of Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers at that point in their careers. He’s a good athlete with running ability. He’s a leader. With so many lingering QB questions, somebody will bet on Trubisky’s upside to at least come in and compete.

The Big Ben and Rivers comparisons aren’t as far-fetched as they seem on the surface, but Manning is a bit of a stretch. Manning topped 4000 yards in each of the seasons being compared, had 33 TDs in year 3, and was selected to 2 Pro Bowls in that span.

Mitch Trubisky may prove to the world this season that he is better than what he was allowed to show with the Bears, but it’s hard to picture him ever quite reaching the level of any of these 3 QBs.
