MJ Morris is reportedly entering the transfer portal. The sophomore quarterback just wrapped up his second season with NC State, and it was an interesting one to say the least.

The passer entered the year in a reserve role, backing up transfer signal caller Brennan Armstrong. He later took over the starting job with the Wolfpack seeing struggles on offense.

After four games, NC State posted a 3-1 record with Morris at the helm, taking down the likes of Clemson and Miami. This coming after a 3-2 start.

That would be all the team would see of their season-saving quarterback, though.

After the Wolfpack’s win over the Hurricanes, Morris removed himself from the starting lineup. He claimed he wanted to retain his redshirt status to save a season of eligibility.

Many immediately speculated a potential transfer given the current landscape of the sport. Had he already been contacted by another program with an offer for the 2024 campaign?

Head coach Dave Doeren was stunned.

“I was surprised by that because he was our starter,” he said after learning of Morris’s decision. “I really didn’t expect that, for a starting player to want to sit back down.”

It seems there was more to MJ Morris’s decision following transfer announcement.

When the news leaked, most believed he’d found an opportunity outside of NC State. His father said that wasn’t the case, though.

“Nobody said he is leaving the program,” Eddie Morris said. “If he would have left the program, he would have left in January and he would have left in May. He had plenty of options.”

Those words ring hollow now.

MJ Morris has reportedly entered the transfer portal, and some of those previously mentioned ‘options’ could certainly be on the table.

In four games this year, the passer threw for 719 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also thrust into a starting role as a freshman, totaling 648 yards and seven scores over five contests.

Time will tell what teams are interested in Morris. Welcome to college football free agency!
