An immense tragedy struck the NASCAR world, and more specifically the world of seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson on Tuesday.

TMZ reports that Johnson’s wife’s parents as well as his 11-year-old nephew died following a shooting at their Oklahoma residence on Monday night.

Police also stated that they’re investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.

“Muskogee Police tell TMZ Sports — Chandra Janway’s parents, Jack and Terry Janway, and nephew, Dalton Janway, were found dead shortly after 9 PM…after receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported someone with a gun before hanging up the phone,” the site reports.

Police told TMZ that they currently consider Terry Janway the suspect in the shooting. Though police are unsure of a motive or if Terry Janway was the one responsible for making the 911 call.

Johnson, who owns a record-tying seven Cup Series championships, returned to the series this after retiring following the 2020 season. He raced a partial IndyCar Series schedule in 2021 for Chip Ganassi racing and then the full schedule in 2022.

But he never seemed to find his footing in the series and returned to NASCAR in 2023 when he purchased a part of Richard Petty Motorsports. The team was then renamed Legacy Motor Club and Johnson is running a limited schedule with the team.

He was scheduled to run the annual Chicago street race this coming weekend. But the team has since announced that it has withdrawn the entry for that race.

LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has elected to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago,” it said in a tweet. “The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made.”

NASCAR did not issue a statement on the incident. The series returns to action on Sunday for the Grant Park 220.
