NFL running backs have been the focal point of the offseason. The narrative of the position being devalued continues to affect contract negotiations for star players.
NFLPA President JC Tretter suggested a way of getting leverage in those contract negotiations, and he’s quickly getting blasted for it online.
When appearing on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Tretter hinted that rushers should fake injuries.
“You need to try to create as much leverage as you possibly can…”
Interesting response from NFLPA President @JCTretter when asked if players like Saquon Barkley should fake injuries for contract purposes: pic.twitter.com/mgBYNmUlJL

“You need to try to create as much leverage as you possibly can,” Tretter said when asked about faking injuries. “That’s the tough thing with the franchise tag or being restricted in movement as it decreases your leverage. You have to find creative ways to build leverage elsewhere.”
He doesn’t come out and say it directly, but he certainly makes a strong suggestion.
“I don’t think anybody would ever say they were fake injuries, but we’ve seen players who didn’t want to be where they currently are have injuries that made them unable to practice and play. But you’re not able to get fined and you’re not able to get punished for not reporting… I don’t think I’m allowed to ever recommend that, but I think each player needs to find a way to build up leverage.”
Fans on social media were quick to blast the NFLPA President.
Most referenced Saquon Barkley, with this fan saying, “Yea Saquon getting hurt AGAIN will surely help him get the money he wants.” Part of the devaluing of the position comes from the injury risks and professional lifespan of tailbacks.
“This definitely doesn’t fall into the category of bargaining/negotiating in good faith,” another fan wrote. It’s certainly interesting coming from the NFLPA leader.
Others said that Tretter should work on the CBA terms to better support his players. “Maybe if the NFLPA did its job and negotiated fair CBA terms, Saquon wouldn’t be in this position,” this follower posted.
Despite the response, it’s clear that running backs need to find a way to leverage their situation. They’ve already started brainstorming on a solution, reportedly creating a group text to discuss options.
What that answer is, we’ll have to wait and see.
