Nick Saban Throws Shade At Ohio State’s $20M Roster During College GameDay Debut

The Ohio State Buckeyes spent an absolutely eye-watering amount of money to construct one of the best rosters in all of college football.

With that expenditure comes massive expectations on both the team and head coach Ryan Day, who may well enter the season on the hot seat.

But legendary head coach Nick Saban, who made his ESPN College GameDay debut on Saturday, isn’t sold on the investment.

Nick Saban Says Ohio State Could Be S— Outta Luck With $20 Million Roster

“I just wanna say, you guys keep talking about a $20 million roster,” Saban began. “If you don’t pay the right guys, you’ll be s— outta luck.”

Saban’s comment sent his cohosts into hysterics before Kirk Herbstreit shook his hand and said “congratulations, you just broke the internet.”

Saban knows a thing or two about roster construction. And he makes a very good point.

The Buckeyes brought in All-American talents in the shape of (former Alabama) safety Caleb Downs and superstar running back Quinshon Judkins.

But are all the personalities going to mesh? Will those highly paid players be invested in the success of the Ohio State program? Can Ryan Day get the best out of all that talent?

Those are very real and very notable questions, and Saban brought them to the forefront.

If Day can’t lead the team to a deep postseason run, he may well be on the way out. Especially if he can’t beat rival Michigan.

“He’s lost that game three years in a row,” SEC analyst Paul Finebaum said recently. “He’s talking about how his players are motivated to come back and play, well, I heard that three years ago, two years ago, and last year. You stunk in all three games…

“You look at his record… It’s gaudy. Nobody has a record like him, except you can’t choke the biggest game of the year. To me, if he can’t beat Michigan this year, when he’s got probably the best team in the country… he oughta be gone.”
