The New York Giants find themselves in a peculiar situation this offseason as they look to effectively navigate through NFL Draft waters. Holding the No. 6 overall pick, there are a number of different routes for the franchise to travel.

Will they look to beef up a defense that ranked 26th in the NFL in points allowed? Will they add a skill position player to an even less productive offensive unit? Will they decide to find a successor for QB Daniel Jones?

Gregg Giannotti of Boomer and Gio fears it will be the latter, and that decision will ultimately prove to be the end for head coach Brian Daboll.

New York is at a crossroads when it comes to their quarterback of the future. The team selected Daniel Jones with the sixth pick in the 2019 draft, and it’s been a story of ups and downs since.

Mostly downs.

Jones was 12-25 over his first three seasons as a starter before breaking through at 9-6 in Year 4. After seeing that first winning campaign, the organization immediately rewarded him with a hefty new contract.

That quickly backfired last year, as the team fell back into the NFC East cellar with Jones missing most of the season with a torn ACL. Daboll’s group finished 6-11, including a 1-5 mark under Jones.

Rumors surfaced this offseason of potential buyer’s remorse for that recent extension, creating speculation looking ahead to the NFL Draft.

Would the Giants draft JJ McCarthy?

The notion seems to be gaining traction, with NFL.com analyst Charles Davis predicting the Michigan QB to come off the board at No. 6.

In a slight surprise, the Giants grab McCarthy to eventually start over again at QB. He might very well sit behind Daniel Jones in 2024 before getting the ball in 2025.

McCarthy has skyrocketed up draft boards this offseason after winning a national championship with the Wolverines. Still, a number of draft experts don’t view his as a Top 10 talent.

That doesn’t mean New York won’t reach to get their guy, though, which is what Gregg Giannotti fears most.

In a recent Boomer and Gio show, he floated the idea of his worst nightmare as a Giants fan, believing it could end Brian Daboll’s tenure in the Big Apple.

“The Giants are going to do the same exact thing they did when they drafted Daniel Jones,” he said. “They’re going to reach for JJ McCarthy and we’re going to be sitting saying, ‘If they really wanted JJ McCarthy, they could’ve traded back to get him, just like we talked about with Daniel Jones.’

“Then JJ McCarthy’s going to be the QB for the Giants, and that’s going to be the end of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.”

Talk about deja vu… The same pick at No. 6, too! Giannotti then continued on.

“JJ McCarthy will be there for them, and then some other team out there is going to convince them that they would take JJ McCarthy, just like Dave Gettleman… It’s gonna happen again!

“I know for a fact the New York Giants love this kid, and that means they don’t care where they draft him… Here we go again.”

Daboll’s seat is already hot given last year’s 6-11 output though he should get some grace for the uncontrollable QB issues. Is he willing to risk his future on McCarthy? We’ll soon find out.

Gregg Giannotti fears history will repeat itself, but he’s hoping the Giants have learned their lesson.
