Patriots head coach Bill Belichick reportedly inked a substantial multi-year contract extension prior to the 2023 season. According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Belichick is locked-up long term.

There’s been ongoing speculations about his tenure after this season. Despite the team’s challenging start with a 1-5 record, Belichick’s position appears surprisingly stable.

Overall uncertainties still loom pretty large, especially given the team’s lackluster performance this season. The Patriots, under Belichick’s dual role as general manager and coach, have been dealing with a number of issues.

Many perceive as the least talented roster in the NFL, a situation that squarely rests on Belichick’s shoulders. Key positions, including quarterback, offensive line, and receivers, among others, are lacking.

Interestingly, this contract extension comes at a time when Belichick is only 8 losses away from tying the all-time record for losses, currently held jointly by Jeff Fisher and Dan Reeves at 165.

Despite this impending milestone, the Patriots’ management seems to have faith in Belichick’s ability to steer the team back to its former glory.

The extension surprised most fans considering Belichick’s recent performance. But he did win 6 Super Bowls in his career as head coach thanks to Tom Brady and that probably played a massive part in the extension.
