Paul Bissonnette never came close to becoming a household name during his time in the NHL, but he has made a name for himself since pivoting to podcasting and broadcasting after retiring. It would be a stretch to suggest he was ever a “star” at any level, and he fell victim to a brutal community note that appeared under a Fox News tweet that referred to him as such.
There are plenty of hockey players who’ve spent a fair amount of time in the NHL but never really managed to leave much of a mark during their time in the league, and it’s pretty safe to say Paul Bissonette falls under that umbrella.
The winger made his NHL debut with the Penguins in 2008 but only played 15 games in Pittsburgh before heading to the Coyotes the following season. He finished out his six-year NHL career in Arizona in 2014, and when everything was said and done, he played 202 games where he recorded seven goals, 15 assists, and racked up 340 penalty minutes.
The Ontario native spent a few years grinding in the AHL before deciding to hang up his skates in 2017—a year before he joined a new venture alongside fellow NHL retiree Ryan Whitney as the co-host of Bartstool’s Spittin’ Chiclet podcast.
That turned out to be a pretty solid pivot, as Bissonette quickly emerged as one of the more entertaining commentators in the hockey space. He leveraged his newfound notoriety to land a spot on the NHL on TNT panel, where he’s continued to cement himself as an equally knowledgable and affable analyst since joining the show in 2021.
The hockey world has spent the past week focusing on the 4 Nations tournament that has given the NHL a much-needed boost thanks to the amount of attention it has been able to generate, and the man commonly referred to as “Biz Nasty” has had more than a few things to say ahead of Thursday night’s highly-anticipated championship game between the United States and Canada.
During an appearance on Pardon My Take, Bissonette said there will be a “national emergency” in the country he hails from if they fail to beat the Americans, and Fox News aggregated that comment for an article that was shared in a tweet where the outlet referred to him as an “ex-Team Canada star.”
However, plenty of fans quickly noted it’s a huge stretch to use the label while referring to a guy who played for Canada at the U-18 World Championships toward the start of the millennium (posting a single point in seven games) and never earned the right to represent his country at the international level again—a reality highlight by the community note that quickly appeared below the tweet in question.
It didn’t take long for the 39-year-old to respond after it was brought to his attention, as he referenced a bit he’s been committing to inspired by the pregnancy drama surrounding adult entertainer Bonnie Blue by saying he’s trying to focus on the upcoming game.
The love of my life is pregnant with another man’s child and I’m getting buried by community notes under fake fox news tweets. None of this matters if Canada wins the #4Nations tonight. 🇨🇦
