Michigan’s football team has played in the biggest stadium in the United States for close to three decades. However, Penn State is coming for the crown, as the one the Nittany Lions call home is poised to be bigger than The Big House this season.

As things currently stand, Narendra Modi Stadium, a cricket venue in India, is recognized as the largest stadium on the planet with a capacity of 132,000 spectators. One in North Korea takes the silver by accommodating 113,281 people, and the University of Michigan earns the bronze thanks to The Big House, which can officially fit 107,601 fans.

College football stadiums round out the rest of the Top 10 (there are eight schools between the Big Ten and SEC that can host more than 100,000 people), but no school has been able to top the Wolverines since they seized the throne back from Tennessee in 1998.

Penn State takes the second spot on the podium as far as America (and the Western Hemisphere) is concerned, but according to its athletic director, that will no longer be the case after the upcoming season gets underway.

Renovations at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium will give it a bigger official capacity than The Big House at Michigan

What is officially known as “Michigan Stadium” could hold 72,000 people when it opened in 1927, but it was purposefully designed to facilitate renovations eventually capable of more than doubling its capacity. It peaked with an official one of 109,901 between 2010 and 2015, and it was still able to retain the throne after some configuration adjustments that lowered it to the current number.

Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, on the other hand, seated 46,284 fans when it hosted its inaugural season in 1949. As of last year, it was the second-largest college football venue with a capacity of 106,304, which was a slight decrease from the previous season due to renovations that began in 2025.

That three-phase project, which is set to be completed ahead of the 2027 campaign, features an array of improvements to the current sound system, lighting, and scoreboards.

The project also involves the construction of new suites to boost revenue in addition to expanded bleacher seating, and while it’s unclear what the final capacity is going to be, it appears Michigan will at least temporarily lose the right to brag about having the biggest college football stadium in the country.

That’s based on what Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft shared when he chatted with Inside the Lion about the seating situation for this season, saying:

“We’ll start the season off with the middle section bleachers and then I think by the USC game all of those upper bleachers will be in.

We continue to count, but I think we’ll be north of 108,000. I think we could get to 109,000, but what people don’t understand is there are all these nooks and crannies that we’re using now.”

There is little doubt Michigan will go out of its way to see and raise Penn State if the final capacity ends up dwarfing that of The Big House when the ongoing project is completed, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if that will be necessary.
