It wasn’t that long ago when Justin Fields was considered by some to be a bona fide franchise quarterback for the Chicago Bears. That didn’t work out, and he was dumped for pennies on the dollar to the quarterback-needy Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.

With Russell Wilson battling a calf injury, Justin Fields got the start for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason opener at home against the Houston Texans. After his three series were up, Steelers fans had gotten the full Justin Fields experience.

It’s not as though Justin Fields never showed promise in Chicago. But, too often he was hurt by negative plays like taking sacks and turning the ball over. Those are the type of plays that make the difference for young quarterbacks.

Sadly, he made those same mistakes again on Friday. He was 5-6 for 67 yards through the air, and those numbers look great. But, he took two backbreaking sacks to end drives and fumbled two snaps, as well.

The highs were definitely high but the lows were low.

There are two ways to look at this if you’re a Steelers fan. The first way to look at it is that he threw the ball efficiently with pretty good accuracy. In fact, his only incompletion should’ve been ruled as a completion.

The other way to look at it is that Justin Fields did not show improvements in key areas from his three-year tenure with the Chicago Bears. The pocket presence was simply not good. The first sack should’ve been avoided, but he escaped right into pressure. You just can’t be doing that.

Ultimately, it added up into three drives and three punts in Justin Fields debut as a Pittsburgh Steeler.

Houston won the game, 20-12.
