Rams Unsure If They Will Bring Back Stetson Bennett Next Year

Stetson Bennett is a legend in the state of Georgia. The former Bulldog quarterback led the Red and Black to two consecutive national titles in 2021 and 2022 before getting drafted in the 4th round of the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.

But, things did not go well in his rookie year, to say the least. Bennett never saw time, and was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list on September 13 just a few days after week one.

There was no official reason ever given for his absence. But, Stetson Bennett was arrested for public intoxication in Dallas last January. Rumors have swirled that he has struggled with substance abuse in the past. Again, those are just rumors, and there’s been nothing with a whole lot of substantiation to that end.

But, that would certainly fit with the non-football illness list designation that Stetson Bennett had for basically the entire season.

It would be pretty rare for a team to give up on a fourth-round pick so quickly. But, new comments from Rams head coach Sean McVay aren’t very encouraging, to say the least.

Here’s a quick excerpt from Pro Football Talk.

Just over a month ago, Rams head coach Sean McVay said he was unsure if 2023 fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett would return to the team in 2024.

Speaking to reporters in a Thursday video conference, McVay didn’t seem to have much more clarity on Bennett’s status.

Via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, McVay said the Rams will “connect with” Bennett “at the appropriate time.”

“And you figure out, ‘All right, where are you at?’ And is this something we feel like is best for him and our football team to bring him back into this ecosystem?” McVay added.

That is not exactly a glowing endorsement of Stetson Bennett from Sean McVay. Again, it’s rare to see a team so nonchalant about a fourth-round pick just a year into his career.

Also, Stetson Bennett is already 26-years-old, far older than basically everyone else from his draft class. Time may be running out for the Georgia legend to get a foothold in the NFL.
