University of South Carolina pitcher Roman Kimball shined in his first start of the 2024 season, helping his team record a no-hitter on opening weekend. The righty was tough to hit, striking out more than half the batters he faced.

Kimball was making his first appearance with the Gamecocks after transferring from Notre Dame. With the Irish, he helped his team reach the College World Series, even coming on in a relief stint in Omaha in 2022.

That would actually be the last time he pitched in a college baseball uniform up until Sunday.

Kimball had to have Tommy John surgery last season which forced him to miss an entire year’s worth of action. Following a lengthy recovery process, he finally made his South Carolina debut in 2024 – more than 600 days after his last game!

And he looked like he hadn’t missed a beat!

On a pitch count for his first start, he put in two full innings of work.

Kimball had the off-speed stuff working, keeping Miami (OH) hitters off balanced over that first pair of frames.

Filth.

Roman Kimball was pulled after 40 pitches, ending his day with a final line of 5 Ks, 3 BBs, and 0 ERs.

His team would keep that success rolling over the next five innings, with five arms completing a combined no-hitter. South Carolina would run rule the RedHawks in seven innings, posting a 14-0 victory.

Kimball picked up his first win with the Gamecocks, and he showed appreciation following his long journey back to the mound.

“Man, what a weekend!” he said on X after the game. “Can’t thank everyone enough for all the love and support throughout the last 600+ days, it truly means the world! Great team wins this weekend and what a way to cap it off with a no-no in a 14-0 win!”

With the win, South Carolina improved to 3-0 on the year. It was the first no-hitter for the program since 2013.
