Sports fans love a good hot take every now and then that they can react to. However, there are some that people should probably just keep to themselves. K.J. Wright’s take on Russell Wilson’s contract is definitely a take that should be kept in the latter category.

Wright was making an appearance on 950 KJR in Seattle when he suggested that Russell Wilson should take a pay cut.

I think this idea is ridiculous. Russell Wilson’s contract is not the reason the Seahawks struggled this season. Bad decisions from the front office are why the Seahawks aren’t Super Bowl contenders anymore. Wilson shouldn’t give up money he’s earned because of that.

We need look no further than the Jamal Adams trade to see how inept the front office has been recently. They gave up two first round pick and a third rounder (which all could have been used to cheaply add talent to the roster) in exchange for the league’s most expensive safety. It unsurprisingly hasn’t worked out.

The Seahawks are also currently spending over $9 million a year between their kicker and punter, but Russell Wilson should be taking a pay cut?

If the Seahawks would just use their resources to get Wilson a functional o-line and a defense that didn’t regularly force him into shootouts instead of spending on kickers, punters, and overpaid safeties, there wouldn’t be issues in Seattle right now.

Plenty of other teams managed to make the playoffs while paying their QBs well. 14 active QBs made at least $25 million this year. 9 of them made the playoffs. 3 made more money this year than Russell Wilson. They all made the playoffs. This isn’t a Russell Wilson problem. This is a Seahawks front office problem.

At the end of the day, the only time we’ve ever seen this front office build a winner, it was when they had one of the league’s best cheat codes. They had Wilson on a crazy cheap rookie deal. The Seattle Seahawks front office needs to figure out how to build a winning roster with Russ getting paid what he’s worth.
