Sam Burns is far from the biggest star on the 2023 US Ryder Cup team.

In fact, the 27-year-old is perhaps the least recognizable name on a roster filled with major championship winners.

But Burns, who teams with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to take on Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton in the first match of the event on Friday, is making the most of his opportunity.

Just check out the sweet new mullet he’ll be donning alongside teammate Brooks Koepka all week.

Burns may not have the quite the resume of others on the US team. But the Louisiana native certainly earned his spot. He posted five top-10 finishes in the 2022-23 season and finished in a tie for ninth at the Tour Championship.

Despite the strong season, he had to wait and see whether he’d be on the plane to Rome. Burns finished 12th in the US Ryder Cup standings and was one of several options for captain Zach Johnson’s last picks.

He sat down with Sirius XM prior to the event on Wednesday and told the hilarious story of how he found out he’d made the team.

Burns began the story by talking about he and his wife went out for coffee the morning Johnson said he would call each of the players who made the team.

“So we get back to the house,” he then continued. “And I had to go to the bathroom. Like, bathroom bathroom. So it was literally as soon as I sit down, Justin (Thomas) started texting me and like ‘have you heard anything yet.’ While I’m responding to him, Zach calls me.

“So, of course I had to to answer. I answer and he’s kind of small talking and he was like ‘hey, as the captain of of the U.S. Ryder Cup team I just wanna officially invite you.’ And I’m like mid poop. And then I start crying because he just told me I’m invited.”

So there you have it. Sam Burns, as he found out he made his first ever Ryder Cup team, was crying on the toilet.

What a legend.
