The San Francisco 49ers were so, so close to winning Super Bowl LVIII after scoring first in OT but they were only able to kick the FG and the Chiefs could not be stopped.

While everyone in Taylor Swift‘s luxury box was losing their minds on Mecole Hardman’s game-winning touchdown, nobody in all of the NFL media world was sadder on the final play of the game than the San Francisco 49ers radio announcers, Greg Papa and Tim Ryan.

While they tried to keep it together, they couldn’t help but voice their frustration with an extremely loud ‘dang it’ after seeing the team’s first Super Bowl title since 1994 slip through their fingers. Here’s a video with the San Francisco 49ers radio announcers voicing their sad frustrations. Obviously, turn the sound on:

You have to feel for those guys, truly. And I saw that for someone who has never had any reason at all to root for the Niners. The heartache in their voices is all too familiar.

Conversely, the Kansas City Chiefs’ radio announcers were on CLOUD NINE when Hardman took it into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown. Andrew Joseph of For The Win found video of that call via Awful Announcing and it’s night-and-day compared to the sad, sad call above:

As sportsbooks are desperate to start raking in futures bets with the NFL season officially over, the San Francisco 49ers appear to have taken the lead. They are +500 at most sportsbooks followed by the Chiefs at +700. What are the odds we hear the 49ers radio announcers on the final call of the season this time next year?
