Brock Purdy Did Something That No San Francisco 49ers Legend Has Ever Done Before

The San Francisco 49ers have had two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play as members of their teams. Joe Montana and Steve Young are two of the best to ever do it, and have plenty of team and NFL records between them.

In fact, it’s hard to think of anyone breaking quarterback records in San Francisco, given how good those two were. The franchise was certainly spoiled for two decades with those two guys at the helm.

And, Brock Purdy was certainly not drafted to break their records. The Iowa State Cyclone was the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, which gave him the annual moniker of “Mr. Irrelevant.” And, back in camp he was the third-stringer behind former NFC champion Jimmy Garoppolo and former number-three-overall pick Trey Lance. In other words, there was basically no chance he would play meaningful snaps.

But, Trey Lance broke his ankle, and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a lisfranc injury, which put Purdy into the starting role in San Francisco’s 12th game. His first official start came a week later.

Now, he has made history.

Brock Purdy became the first San Francisco 49ers quarterback to win their first three starts

Purdy already made history last week, when he joined Aaron Rodgers as the only two quarterbacks to have passer ratings above 115 in their first two starts.

And, he continued his strong play today against the Washington Commanders. He was 15/22 for 234 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His passer rating of 114.6 was just below that 115 number, but it was more than enough to help San Francisco win, 37-20.
Now, he’s made more history.

Wow. That’s pretty impressive considering the royalty that’s come through there. Purdy will continue to lead the 11-4 Niners in their quest for their sixth Super Bowl.
