27-year-old Shohei Ohtani is a modern marvel. What he does on a baseball field should really be impossible. He was so good in 2021 that he was not only the American League’s starting pitcher in the All-Star Game, he was the team’s leadoff hitter and designated hitter.

Ohtani finished the season with a 9–2 record as a pitcher with a 3.18 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 156 strikeouts. He finished the season as a hitter with 46 home runs, 100 RBI, 103 runs and 26 steals. Oh yeah, he also led the American League in triples on his way to being unanimously voted the American League Most Valuable Player.

So how can he improve on a season like that? Is it even possible?

According to him it is.

“I feel like I can’t be doing the same thing as last year, to have the same stats as last year,” Ohtani said Tuesday at the Angels’ spring training complex, reported the Associated Press. “I need to get better and keep on improving, so that’s the plan.”

Ohtani added, “Obviously, skills-wise, there’s room for improvement. But physically, I already feel a lot stronger than last year, so I think we’re on a good start.”

So who is going to be more afraid to face Shohei Ohtani in 2022? Pitchers or hitters?

Shohei Ohtani getting better should make the rest of the league very afraid

“Nothing is really going to change personally just for having one good year,” Ohtani coninued. “I feel like the key is to continue having success for a lot of years to come. As long as we can do that, I feel like our team is in a good spot.”

Angels manager Joe Maddon, incredibly, has one idea that could Ohtani better in 2022.

“It’s hard to imagine he’s going to do more this year than he did last year,” said Maddon. “I’ll take a repeat performance, adding maybe several more innings as a pitcher. But he’s just a different animal. He’s a good man that happens to be a really good baseball player.”

Needless to say, Shohei Ohtani saying he feels strong and still has room for improvement got baseball fans’ attention.
