A rally in support of Sophie Cunningham is being held ahead of the Fever's game on Friday
The Sophie Cunningham discourse is showing no signs of slowing down as it crosses over from the internet into the real world. According to reports, a “rally” for the Indiana Fever guard is being planned ahead of their game on Friday, July 31.
Sophie Cunningham has become one of the central characters in the WNBA this season via viral moments on the court, Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition appearances, and her recent comments about “protecting young girls” from transgender athletes in youth sports.
Cunningham’s comments only further enflamed the ongoing culture war that surrounds the WNBA, which has even escalated to Congress as Republican lawmakers sent a letter to the league seeking answers for what they believe to be “racially motivated attacks” on Caitlin Clark.

The fervor around Cunningham looks set to continue into the weekend, as reports indicate that a “rally” in her support is being planned ahead of the Indiana Fever’s game against the Portland Fire at Moda Center on July 31 at 5:30 p.m.

A rally ahead of Friday night’s game would be the second such rally organized by Cunningham’s fans, with the first having taken place in Seattle following an incident in which Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton heckled teenage girls who were wearing shirts in support of the Fever guard. Keaton was suspended five games for her conduct.
“I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind,” Cunningham said in response to the incident on social media. “Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon💕 yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is.”

The rally is being organized by Washington-based activist Amy Sousa, who helped organize the Cunningham rally outside Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday. The flyer for the event tells attendees to “join fellow fans to cheer for Sophie and celebrate women’s sports.”
“We were just going to do something quiet with just a couple of us, and seeing what happened to those girls, we just thought, ‘We can’t be quiet,’” Sousa told Fox.
“I don’t want to be quiet about this. I want to stand in public solidarity with those girls. I also want to stand in public solidarity with Sophie and keep this momentum going.”
So far this year, the 29-year-old Cunningham — in her second season with the Indiana Fever — is averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 22.9 minutes per game.
