Space Jam 2 is set to start filming this summer, with LeBron James reprising the role that Michael Jordan had in the 1996 original Space Jam movie, where he guided the Tune Squad to an upset victory over the Monstars. While there have been lots of reports out there about the difficulty James is having in recruiting other top players to join the cast, one of LeBron’s teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers, Lonzo Ball, has expressed some interest, so, who knows, maybe we see the point guard in the movie.
As LeBron continues to look for talent to be in Space Jam 2, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith decided he might be able to help with the decision. Talking on First Take this morning, the always outspoken Smith had a chance to reveal his top-5 Space Jam 2 targets to cast in the film. As the headline above says, the choices were, uh, less than stellar. Take a look at the video below to see who Stephen A. wants to see in Space Jam 2 alongside LeBron.

To say I’m confused by a few of these is an understatement. Sure, Stephen A. Smith offers up some intriguing names on that list to be in Space Jam 2, but let’s think about which superstars starred in the original Space Jam as a basis here. These suggestions can’t hold a flame to those guys — which included the likes of Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Larry Bird, among others. I kind of like the idea of having Embiid become a Monstar, and think Taurasi and Lillard would be pretty good choices, too, but I’m passing on Stan Van and, yep, even the giant Boban.
I’m sure LeBron James has talked to everyone about starring in Space Jam 2 at this point — presumably being turned down by the majority of them — but how about a cast that includes Embiid, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis, with Chris Pratt providing the comedy like Bill Murray did in the original? That just sounds a lot more fun, doesn’t it?
Who knows how the cast of Space Jam 2 will actually look, but, please, whatever happens, don’t let Stephen A. Smith have any input.
