Stephen Curry is one of the best players in NBA history, not to mention the greatest shooter the league has ever seen. But back in 2009 when he was coming out of small school Davidson, there weren’t too many people who thought the two-time league MVP and three-time NBA champ would necessarily become what he has today. One guy who did, though? Then Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson, who snagged Steph with the No. 7 pick in the NBA Draft that year and, well, the rest is history.

While it all worked out more than fine for the Warriors and Stephen Curry, looking back on that fateful day 10 years ago isn’t something that Curry’s parents remember as being too joyous. That’s because, in an interview with NBC Sports Northwest the other day before this year’s NBA Draft Lottery, the Curry’s said that they never wanted the Dubs to select their son. Hell, Steph’s dad even told Don Nelson, “don’t,” when asked what he thought about the team choosing Steph, while the player’s mom wasn’t even sure where Golden State even was. Take a look at the video below.

While that might hurt to see for some overly sensitive Warriors fans, Stephen Curry and his parents have become the first family of hoops in the Bay Area, so no one should be too butt hurt by the fact that, a decade ago, Steph’s parents weren’t thrilled with where their oldest son would be starting his NBA career. However, while Dubs fans shouldn’t be hurt by any of this, somehow, New York Knicks’ fans might be a little pissed off about what the Curry’s said.

That’s because, allegedly, the team that Steph’s dad hints at in the video — the one who played faster and had a better locker room at the time — was actually the Knicks, who held the No. 8 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, eventually selecting Jordan Hill after Curry was off the board. Needless to say, that didn’t work out too great, so Knicks fans can still be bitter that their team didn’t trade up to try and get the sharpshooting point guard instead.

So as the New York Knicks franchise has proven to be one of the most dysfunctional in the league in the past 10 years — and their fans sulk in misery after slipping to the No. 3 spot in this year’s NBA Draft, giving them no chance to select Zion Williamson — all Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors have done is become the best franchise in sports, creating an absolute dynasty. But, hey, at least there was a moment in time when Curry preferred New York over Golden State, right?
