The New York Mets are wrapping up a three-game home series against the lowly Miami Marlins today (Wednesday, April 9). Not only have the Mets been hosting one of the worst teams in baseball, but the weather has been absolutely frigid in New York City, with windchill bringing the temperatures down into the 30s.
Despite the weak competition and poor weather, the show most go on, both on and off the field. SNY, the local TV station that broadcasts Mets games, has long been thought of as one of the best in the business through its elite booth of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling, and its innovative broadcast/production team.
Another aspect of the Mets’ broadcast that fans love is its willingness to get goofy, particularly with field reporter Steve Gelbs. In recent years, Gelbs has gone viral for sideline escapades that include getting into an argument with a Boomer-aged fan over a foul ball, trying the rancid food from the Cincinnati Reds’ press area vending machine (a chicken, rice and cheese burrito), helping Chicago Cubs fans build a cup snake, and more.

On Tuesday, April 8, during the Mets’ 4:10 p.m. game against the Marlins, which they won 10-5, Gelbs was out in the stands handing out hot chocolate to the freezing fans before eventually deciding to chug some whipped cream straight from the bottle, elementary school style.

As of the Mets’ rubber game against the Marlins on April 9, the team has won six straight games and sit atop the National League East with an 8-3 record. On Friday, they’ll begin their first West Coast trip of the 2025 season when they head to Sacramento to take on the similarly pathetic Athletics.
