Tetairoa McMillan did not want to put himself in an awkward situation on his first day as a member of the Carolina Panthers. He chose not to answer the first question asked of him by ESPN beat reporter David Newton.

Respectfully, decline.

McMillan, a wide receiver at the University of Arizona, was selected No. 8 overall in the first round of the NFL Draft. Carolina was looking to add a weapon for Bryce Young so they went with the guy who does freakish things during practice like this:

Or during a game like this:

At 6-foot-4, 219 pounds, McMillan immediately becomes the primary deep target for the former Heisman Trophy winner. Panthers fans were thrilled with the pick. The organization could not be more excited to have him.

Young is equally as thrilled.

Tetairoa McMillan joins a wide receiver room that already features Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette. The other names are mostly insignificant when it comes to their status in the NFL. No disrespect to Dan Chisena or Jalen Coker!

When asked about how he differs from his new pass-catching counterparts, McMillan declined to answer. Although it was a fair question in theory, it was presented in the worst way possible. David Newton essentially asked him to explain why he is better than the players with whom he will spend the most time.

McMillan thought for a moment about how to respond to the question asked of him. There is no way to do so without putting other people down. He declined to answer with an awkward laugh.

If Tetairoa McMillan had said that he has an edge in terms of his ability to catch jump balls, headlines would be phrased as “MCMILLAN TRASHES PANTHERS WIDE RECEIVERS FOR JUMP BALL FAILS” or something like that. If he said that his strength is his biggest strength, people would twist it as “MCMILLAN CALLS PANTHERS WIDE RECEIVERS WEAK!” And so on and so forth.

It was a horrible question. It was not answered.
